Stroke Program

Phoenix North
People often think strokes only affect older people, but a stroke can strike at any age. During basketball practice, 14-year-old Phoenix North collapsed and suffered a massive stroke. Three surgeries and many months of rehab later, Phoenix continues to make progress. Read his story here.

Stroke Rehabilitation
A stroke can be devastating, robbing people of their mobility, speech, independence and freedom to live life. But recovery from stroke is possible. Research shows that early and specialized rehabilitation can help maximize a person's physical and cognitive recovery and enhance quality of life.

Our goal-directed approach to stroke rehabilitation focuses on helping patients:

  • Regain mobility and improve balance
  • Learn the skills necessary to perform daily activities
  • Improve speech and swallowing
  • Develop new cognitive and behavioral strategies to compensate for any deficits

The Patient Experience
RIM's Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). CARF recognized our programs as meeting the highest standards in quality, safety and outcome measures.

RIM's state-of-the-art Neuroscience Unit for Stroke and Brain Injury Recovery (watch video) is equipped with the most advanced neurorecovery technology available and is staffed by experts in stroke rehabilitation.

RIM's Stroke Team is led by a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (known as a physiatrist). Other members of the team include:

  • Rehab nursing

Specialized Care
RIM's stroke program incorporates therapeutic techniques based on the newest information available from emerging research around the globe. Patients have access to some of the most promising and advanced therapies for brain recovery including:

Outpatient Stroke Rehab Program
Once a patient is discharged from our inpatient stroke program, treatment continues seamlessly, as the information from our acute care hospital is transferred to the outpatient facility prior to the start of care. Through electronic medical record, case management and staff contact, we ensure a smooth transition and peace of mind, that the quality of care you have come to expect, will continue. Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s outpatient program is designed to help individuals return back to their homes, work and community activities.
