Parkinson’s Disease Therapy

DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) is pleased to offer our patients with Parkinson’s disease the most advanced speech therapy and mobility therapy treatments available today. These include LSVT® LOUD and LSVT® BIG, two innovative and clinically proven methods of treatment for improving communication and movement, as well as the perceptual problems associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Innovative Therapy with Amazing Results for Persons with Parkinson's Disease

LSVT LOUD

This program provides the tools for certified speech pathologists to teach people with Parkinson’s to override their impaired perception of voice volume, and think of speaking “loud” in order to actually speak at a more normal volume. LSVT LOUD is the only communication treatment currently available for Parkinson’s that is supported by Level 1 research data, the highest standard in research.

LSVT BIG

This program was developed to apply the same concept of impaired perception to movement. It teaches people with Parkinson’s to override their perception of movement distance, such as step length, and instead think of moving in “big” movements, which brings their movements closer to normal.

Both LSVT LOUD and BIG programs work well with individuals with early or chronic Parkinson’s, and also are successful with other neurological disorders. RIM’s therapists are specially trained and certified in these techniques. A physician prescription is required for outpatient therapy.
