Brain Injury Rehabilitation

zerg-cropped190x270Recognized as a national leader in the treatment of brain injuries, the brain injury program at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) has been helping people with brain injuries rebuild their lives since 1979.

Today, RIM treats more than 250 brain injury inpatients a year. Our high inpatient volume and diverse patient population mean our team of experts is experienced in treating all types of brain injuries, including the most complex cases.

RIM houses the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 16 centers of excellence in the country for the care and research of those with traumatic brain injury (TBI). SEMTBIS conducts ground breaking brain injury research that is vital to future advances in the treatment and recovery of persons with brain injuries.

In addition, RIM is home to the Neurorecovery Center, an innovative therapeutic program aimed at neuromuscular re-education and activating impaired muscles and nerves following a brain injury or other neurological condition.

The Patient Experience

RIM's specialized inpatient and outpatient brain injury rehabilitation programs have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). CARF recognized our programs as meeting the highest standards in quality, safety and outcome measures.

RIM's state-of-the-art Neuroscience Unit for Stroke and Brain Injury Recovery is equipped with some of the most advanced neurorecovery technology available for stroke and brain injury recovery, and is staffed by experts who have specialized training in stroke and brain injury recovery.

RIM's Brain Injury Team is led by a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (known as a physiatrist). Other members of the team include:

  • Rehab nursing
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech-language pathology
  • Respiratory therapy
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Nutrition
  • Neuropsychology
  • Social work

RIM’s team also involves patients and their family members at every step of the treatment process, so that everyone can make informed decisions about inpatient and outpatient services, follow-up care, home adjustments and other special needs.

  • The Armeo Spring, which promotes constraint induced therapy to strengthen motor function
  • The InMotion2, an upper extremity robotic therapy to help build new neural pathways
  • Dynavision 2® to address visual impairments, balance and attention
  • Pharmacologic interventions to manage spasticity
  • Advanced therapeutic interventions to improve speech and swallowing

RIM also provides a wide range of specialty services including:

Outpatient Brain Injury Rehab Program

Once a patient is discharged from our inpatient stroke program, treatment continues seamlessly, as the information from our acute care hospital is transferred to the outpatient facility prior to the start of care. Through electronic medical record, case management and staff contact, we ensure a smooth transition and peace of mind, that the quality of care you have come to expect, will continue. Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s outpatient program is designed to help individuals return back to their homes, work and community activities.
