Taping for Rehabilitation Theory and Practical Application

Course Description:

In this course we will explore the properties of 3 different therapeutic tapes used in rehabilitation: Leukotape, Dynamic tape and kinesiology tape. Participants will achieve a basic, working knowledge of the various factors that contribute to the successful application of each of these tapes, including how and when they are most effective based on current research. The focus will be on applying tape for musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain. We will also present the pre-cautions and contraindications when using these various taping applications.

Format of Course: (Lecture, Lab, video, case studies, etc.)

The course utilizes an evidence - based approach to treatment discussing the latest research delivered through lecture, demonstration videos, hands-on laboratory sessions, and open discussions.

Required materials/equipment/clothing: Please be prepared to participate in lab by wearing shorts, t-shirt and tennis shoes. You will be supplied Kinesiology tape, coverall, leukotape tape and dynamic tape to practice with during the lab sessions.

Course Objectives:

1. Review and Discussion of Precautions, Contraindications and Side Effects of therapeutic taping application in various patient populations.

2. Demonstrate Proper application of Leukotape tape to upper and lower extremities, assessing the effectiveness of their applications based on changes in pain, ROM and motor control.

3. Demonstrate Proper application of Dynamic tape to upper and lower extremities, assessing the effectiveness of their applications based on changes in pain, ROM and motor control.

4. Demonstrate Proper application of Kinesiology Tape to Cervical, Lumbar, upper and lower extremities, assessing the effectiveness of their applications based on changes in pain, ROM and motor control.

Instructor:

Laura Ramus, PT, ATC

Laura is currently a physical therapist for RIM and medical director for the WNBA Las Vegas Aces. She has 35 years of experience treating orthopedic/sports medicine injuries in professional, Olympic, collegiate, high school and amateur athletes. Laura shares this wisdom by teaching advanced sports medicine techniques to professionals around the world.

Laura received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, in 1987. She then completed a fellowship in sports medicine through the University of North Carolina and Health South Rehabilitation Corporation, receiving her certification as an athletic trainer in 1990. During this fellowship, Laura trained under prominent orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and well-known physical therapist Kevin Wilk in Birmingham, AL.

Laura was an athletic trainer at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and for the 1994 United States Paralympic swim team. She worked in 2015/2016 as a physical therapist/athletic trainer on the Women’s Professional Tennis tour. She served as the head athletic trainer and strength coach for 21 Seasons with the WNBA Detroit Shock, New York Liberty and currently, the Las Vegas Aces. She is currently RIM’s Director of Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program.
