Course Description

Implicit Bias in Healthcare lecture’s goal is to provide participants with knowledge of the definition and history of implicit bias, and present various research that promulgated the current knowledge and construct of implicit bias. This lecture will also discuss the most common types of implicit biases in healthcare and how it creates a disparity in care for minorities and marginalized groups. Most importantly, this lecture will discuss various ways healthcare professionals can mitigate implicit bias through exploring, identifying and combating their own implicit biases when interacting with their patients and making decisions for their healthcare needs.

  • Discuss some of the most common types of implicit bias in healthcare
  • Review current research related to implicit bias as it relates to healthcare professionals
  • Understand the relationship between implicit bias and healthcare disparities
  • Learn how to mitigate the impact of implicit bias in healthcare decision-making.


Rhoda currently works as a Senior Physical Therapist at Brasza OP Therapy Services. She received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1993 in Manila, Philippines, and later acquired her transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2008 from Arizona State University. Rhoda has more than 25 years of experience and expertise in assessing, evaluating, and treating orthopedic cases using skills, experience, and knowledge in physical therapy. She owned a Physical Therapy Private Practice in Illinois for 10 years before she decided to move to Canada to start a family in 2012. She has been with RIM family since 2014.

As an Asian American immigrant and a member of LGBTQIA+ community, Rhoda has experienced and seen firsthand the effects of implicit bias, explicit bias and discrimination. Rhoda has developed a true passion and dedication in educating healthcare professionals like herself on how to mitigate discrimination specifically for LGBTQIA+ patients. Rhoda is the chairperson of the first ever DMC-DEI LGBTQIA+ Steering committee and a member of Diversity Equity and Inclusivity (DEI) task force at DMC. She has co-presented a RIM Academy four-hour lecture titled What’s in a Name: Creating a Welcoming and Inclusive Atmosphere for LGBTQIA Clients. She is currently presenting lectures throughout DMC titled: Creating an inclusive place for LGBTQIA+ people in healthcare setting.
