Course Description

This informative one-hour session assists the health professional in development of the fundamentals of skill sets critical to recognizing potential human trafficking victims, effectively communicating with them, and implementing the necessary steps to report this illegal activity. This program meets the mandatory requirements set forth by the state of Michigan for all licensed health professionals.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the current types, epidemiology, and status of human trafficking activity in the state of Michigan, as well as the prevalence in our communities and work settings
  • List the guiding principles of assessment and care of human trafficking victims, using a “trauma informed’ care approach
  • Identify “red flag” indicators of human trafficking in the clinical settings
  • Discuss effective communication strategies and a framework for initial inquiry with victims of human trafficking
  • Follow legal guidelines for reporting potential human trafficking illegal activity to law enforcement and child protection agencies

Instructor:

Holly Lookabaugh-Deur, PT, DSc, GCS, CEEAA
Holly is a practicing physical therapist and Director of Clinical Excellence at an outpatient rehabilitation organization. Her 43-year career has included patient care in acute, long term, home, and outpatient care settings, as well as research, and educational settings. Lookabaugh-Deur is board certified in geriatrics and holds multiple specialty credentials. She was trained in the identification and management of human trafficking at the Office of Victims of Crimes within the US Justice Dept. Previously a member of the Board of Directors for APTA MI, this course was developed following the implementation of new licensure requirements for physical therapy professionals in 2017 in collaboration with Kathleen Jacubiak-Kovacek.
