
Course Description:
This four (4) hour basic to intermediate level course is designed to educate rehabilitation clinicians on the best practices in the evaluation and treatment of burn patients across the continuum of care.
The first section focuses on burn basics, including degree of burn staging, phases of burn healing, the resuscitation process, and frequent surgical interventions.
The second section addresses burn rehabilitation management across the continuum of care. Acute care, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient interventions for physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology will be presented.
The final section covers considerations for special patient populations, including Steven Johnson’s Syndrome, frostbite, and heterotopic ossification.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Burn Basics
- Identify the four types of burn injury.
- Describe the different depths of burn injury.
- Identify 3 different surgical interventions for burns.
- Rehabilitation of Burns
- Identify the priorities of therapy through the continuum of care.
- Identify appropriate splinting and positioning protocols to best maintain function following a burn.
- Identify challenges facing patients and therapists during recovery.
- The Speech-Language Pathologist’s Role
- Identify dysphagia and dysphonia risk factors in this patient population, including those with severe inhalation injuries.
- Define microstomia.
- Identify strategies and devices used to treat and prevent microstomia and facial scars, while setting appropriate goals for a burn rehabilitation program.
- Special Considerations
- Understand the concept of Hyperbaric Oxygen for an inhalation patient.
- Identify 2 primary differences between SJS and TENS.
- Understand the process of demarcation for a patient with frostbite.
Instructor:
Linda Hall PT, MS, DPT
Linda is a graduate of Central Michigan University (BS, MS, PT) and Boston University (DPT). She has more than 25 years’ experience in the Acute Care setting, with a focus on trauma/burn ICU and neurological diagnoses,
serving as a clinical instructor for many physical therapy students. Linda has 16 years’ experience as an SCCE and is in her 12th year as a Regional Clinical Coordinator in the academic setting.
Linda is currently a Clinical Physical Therapy Specialist and SCCE at Detroit Receiving Hospital and an Assistant Professor/RCC at Central Michigan University. She is a member of the Detroit Area Clinical Education Forum (DACEF), having previously served
as Chair. She is also a member of the APTA-MI Special Interest Group for Clinical Education (SIG-CE) currently serving as Treasurer. Linda currently is an APTA-MI Board of Directors member serving as Director for Professional Development and previously
was Nominating Committee Chair. She has been an active member of the APTA and APTA-Michigan since 1994. Linda is a current CEU Reviewer for APTA-Michigan and was a certified APTA Certified Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) trainer. She is the recipient
of the Norene Clouten Outstanding SCCE Award (2015), the Central Michigan University Outstanding Alumni Award (2011), and a nominee for the Cindy Kincaid Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award (2007).

Aileen King, MS, OTR-L
Aileen King is a Clinical OT Specialist at Detroit Receiving Hospital. She received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Grand Valley State University and her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Western
Michigan University. She has worked in acute care for the last 5 years and joined the Burn ICU team in 2019.
Aileen has attended several burn conferences to further her professional growth and development in the specialty area of burn rehabilitation, including the Southern Region Medical Burn Conference, with emphasis on therapy. She has served as an interdisciplinary
team member and educator in events such as the DRH Burn blitz to educate staff on the value of therapy services. She is an active member of the Burn Continuum of Care at the DMC and participates in weekly multidisciplinary meetings in the Burn ICU
to provide a collaborative approach to patient care.
Aileen is an active clinical educator. In addition to her work in the Burn ICU, she also sees patients with orthopedic and neurological injuries.

Salva Colomba, MA, CCC-SLP
Salva Colomba is a graduate of Wayne State University (BA, MA). She has 20 years’ experience working with a wide range of in-patient populations, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury,
burn injury, polytrauma, geriatrics, and critical illness. She has served as a clinical mentor and educator across multiple disciplines and has been a clinical instructor for Speech-Language Pathology graduate students and interns. She has presented
in various capacities, including at the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association annual conferences, Nursing Grand Rounds, and guest lectures at WSU and Oakland University. Salva found her work as a part-time instructor in WSU’s SLP graduate
program particularly rewarding, where she taught Motor Speech Disorders for three years, both in person and online during the pandemic. She has also served as a co-investigator for a TRIP study (translating research into practice) at Detroit Receiving
Hospital, in collaboration with the Palliative Care and Medical Nutritional Therapy services.
