Treatment of Dancers

Course DescriptionDancers have a high incidence of injuries yet there are few clinicians with the specialized training to properly treat them.  This course will introduce the history of dance medicine as well as review dance types and moves with a focus on ballet and other popular dance forms.  Dance specific treatments will be taught and the participants will be involved in practicing and instructing the techniques.  In addition, the course will also introduce taping and bandaging techniques that are commonly beneficial in the treatment of dance related injuries. Participants should wear or bring workout clothing.

Level of Course:  Intermediate

Course Objectives:  Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to

  1. Understand basis dance moves.
  2. Recognize dance injuries and mechanisms of injuries
  3. Demonstrate specific treatment for dance injuries

Instructor: Mary Donahue, Med, AT, PT, PES  received her BSPT from University of Connecticut in 1989 and BSEd Physical Education and Athletic Training Keene State College in 1979. She has 31 years of experience as a Physical Therapist, 37 years as an Athletic Trainer, and over 28 years of experience treating dancers and dance related injuries. Mary began studying dance physical therapy in 1993 and was the PT for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular for 10 years.  In her practice she has worked with numerous Broadway touring shows and treated dancers of many genres from young dancers to professional dancers.
