An Evidence-Based Look at Orthopedic Special Tests for the Upper Extremity and Thoracic/Cervical Spine

Course Description: Therapists and rehabilitation specialists are faced with hundred of special tests both old and new. Which one to choose? How does one choose?....This course will give attendees tools to help choose the most appropriate specials for most commonly encountered upper extremity/thoracic & cervical spine pathologies in an outpatient orthopedic setting. It will highlight the special tests with the strongest evidence and the best diagnostic accuracy. The course will also include hands-on lab to allow for practice opportunities and tips from the instructor to improve the performance of unfamiliar special tests.

Level of Course: Intermediate

Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to

  • Name the special tests with the best accuracy and best evidence for each of the joints of the upper extremity, thoracic and cervical spine
  • Perform the above tests and measures with skill
  • Verbalize whether a test is best suited for screening or for confirmation of a diagnostic hypothesis
  • Give at least 1 example of how test clustering can enhance the likelihood of an accurate diagnosis
  • Apply the principles discussed to determine the likelihood of a patient having a diagnosis given a clinical scenario.

Instructor: Marie-Eve Pepin PT, OMPT, MSPT, DPT is a graduate of McGill University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Therapy, a Master’s Degree from Oakland University, and a Doctorate from the MGH Institute. She has specialty certification in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy from Oakland University. Dr. Pepin is a core faculty member in the Wayne State University Physical Therapy program. She has been teaching orthopedic content and in particular therapeutic exercise interventions, for over 15 years. She has also worked as an orthopedic Physical Therapist for 22 years
