Cynthia's Story

“My knee pain prevented me from doing everything.” – Cynthia

CynthiaFor Cynthia, every step she took was excruciating. The pain in her knee was so bad, she couldn’t walk, exercise, do housework, go out with family or friends. She even quit her job as a bus driver because she couldn’t function.

“It prevented me from doing everything. My doctor told me it was time to do a knee replacement for my bone-on-bone arthritis.”

Cynthia had surgery at the Detroit Medical Center. When she was sent home from the procedure, therapists came to her house to work on her mobility so she could make her own way to rehab.

As Cynthia transitioned to therapy at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s (RIM) outpatient facility in Harper Woods, she worked out three times a week. Therapists had her walking up and down steps, riding a bike, doing stretches and squats – things she hadn’t been able to do for a long time.

“My goal when I started therapy was to not use a cane and they made it happen! My therapists were great. They really worked with me and had so much patience.”

Cynthia did try a therapy center a little closer to her home and after three sessions realized that RIM was the only place for her. She loves that RIM gives you one on one treatment versus group sessions and that the therapists are completely focused on helping you improve.

Cynthia credits RIM for helping her get back to doing many of things she couldn’t and let her enjoy life as a retiree.
