DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) is southeast Michigan’s only freestanding acute rehabilitation hospital. Because our primary focus is rehabilitation, RIM provides a level of care distinctly different from other facilities and community hospitals that offer rehabilitation services.

Specialized Care
Individualized treatment is provided by a team of health care professionals led by a physiatrist (a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation). Other members of the treatment team include specialist in:

- therapeutic recreation
Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is connected to one of the nation’s most respected medical institutions, the Detroit Medical Center. Within minutes our patients have access to the latest in radiological imaging, laboratories, and acute care. Twenty-four hour patient care is also provided.

What To Expect
Upon admission, you will be assigned to one of our three inpatient patient floors, each of which has its own team of rehabilitation professionals. During the first few days at the hospital, the specialists who make up your rehabilitation team will evaluate your health status and work with you to develop a rehabilitation program.
The program will include daily activities designed to help you meet your goals. It is important that you follow your rehabilitation program and commit to doing as much for yourself as possible during your stay. Each week your treatment team will meet to discuss your progress, goals, and discharge plan.
Our staff also provides ongoing education to help you and your family understand your diagnosis, promote your continued good health, and prepare for your return to the community.
Your family's help and understanding is important to your successful rehabilitation. Your family or caregivers will be encouraged to become familiar with the way rehabilitation works, and are encouraged to participate in family conferences and family instruction, both of which will help them understand your abilities, therapy sessions and treatment.
Rehabilitation stays are as short as possible, so you can go home or to another safe place as soon as possible. To get the most out of your rehabilitation stay, our program operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This means that we will encourage you to do as much of your personal care and hygiene as you can safely do as soon as you are able, every day and night.
Rehabilitation means that you will be working hard to get back abilities that you lost for a while. It also means learning how to do things differently if an ability cannot be regained.
What to Bring With You
While you are in the hospital, you will need about a week's supply of clothing. Clothes should be washable, loose fitting, comfortable and easy to care for. Articles of clothing such as sweat pants, underwear and shirts, should be marked with your name to assist with identification if misplaced. The following is a suggested list:

- Shoes (rubber sole and heel) check with your therapist before purchasing a new pair
- Pullover shirts and sweaters
- Socks
- Slippers

- Comb or brush
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Shampoo
- Electric shaver or safety razor
- A list of medications you take regularly (medications should be left at home)
- Ostomy equipment, if necessary
Valuables, such as jewelry or large sums of money, should be left home. Electronics and electrical appliances also should be left home.
Services & Amenities
Most of the patient care units feature private and semi-private suites, complete with home-like amenities including private baths with roll-in showers, free cable TV, free telephone service, and desktop work stations. The suites are large and offer families a comfortable place to sleep for overnight visits, or to just spend time with patients.
The patient care units also include a dining and kitchen area for patients and their families, and a training apartment to help patients learn the skills necessary to return home as independently as possible.

Patient Parking
Free patient parking is available in the flat lot in front of the DMC Heart Hospital or in the Lot A parking structure on the corner of Mack and Beaubien with validation. Bring your parking ticket with you to receive validation. Validation will be provided at designated locations within the hospital and/or clinic.
Visitor Parking
Free visitor parking is available in the Lot A parking structure next to the DMC Heart Hospital on the corner of Mack and Beaubien with validation. Bring your parking ticket with you to receive validation. Validation will be provided at designated locations within the hospital and/or clinic.
Valet Parking
Valet parking is available in front of the hospital for $10. For those with valid State of Michigan handicapped placard and/or license plate the fee is $5.
After You Are Discharged
Once a patient is discharged from our inpatient hospital, treatment continues seamlessly, as the information from our acute care hospital is transferred to the outpatient facility prior to the start of care. Through electronic medical record, case management and staff contact, we ensure a smooth transition and peace of mind, that the quality of care you have come to expect, will continue.
