Recreational Therapy
For disabled individuals, recreational opportunities can be essential to their rehabilitation. Therapeutic recreation specialists promote healthy leisure activities, such as community outings, gardening, sports, games, and cultural events. Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology
RIM's Psychologists and Neuropsychologists are experienced in the assessment of psychological and neuropsychological functions, as well as psychotherapy to deal with the adjustment to disability and support during the recovery process. Rehabilitation Psychology assessments may involve emotional and personality testing to determine adjustment to injury or illness, as well as assessment of coping strategies to deal with changes in role or self-concept for those involved in the rehabilitation process. Neuropsychological assessment involves testing areas of cognition that may have been affected by neurologic insult or a neurologic or psychiatric disorder. Such areas of cognition may include attention, language, visual-spatial functioning, memory, higher-level problem solving or executive functions, and changes in emotional and/or personality functioning secondary to such neurologic insult or disorder. Psychotherapy services involve treatment for depression, anxiety, pain management, substance abuse, adjustment to injury and/or disability, role changes, etc. Treatment includes individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy (e.g. pain management group).

Return-to-Work Services
Getting injured employees back to work is the goal of RIM's Return-to-Work Program. Our program provides evaluation, treatment, and work re-entry services for individuals recovering from job-related injuries or an illness that limits work performance. As specialists in rehabilitation, our experienced treatment team of physical and occupational therapists work with each employee, along with his or her case manager and insurance company to achieve measurable results. Serial Casting
Serial casting consists of repeated casting of a limited joint in a stretched position with the goal of increasing joint motion and muscle flexibility in order to improve function. This procedure is used to correct contractures (tight joints and muscles) resulting from spasticity or other causes, such as immobility. Social Work
Social Work provides counseling to patients and family members to assist in their adjustment following an illness or injury. Patients and families are aided with identification and referral to resources in the community, which will further assist their integration back into their communities. The social worker takes on the role of case manager in many instances, coordinating services with other agencies and case managers on behalf of the patient. Social work services are offered to all RIM inpatients and at the outpatient locations listed below.

Spasticity Management
A team approach is used in the management of spasticity for both inpatients and outpatients. The team includes the physician and the therapists, who collaborate to provide the best treatment options and outcomes for each patient. The physician evaluates, provides and/or refers the patient for the appropriate treatments, including oral medication, injection therapy, intrathecal Baclofen therapy, neurological or orthopedic surgery, and rehabilitation therapy. Physical and occupational therapists work closely with the physician to provide therapy that targets functional improvements based on patient goals and rehabilitation potential. Speech-Language Pathology
Evaluation and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders in adults are provided by Speech-Language Pathologists who are individually certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Additionally, the professional service program in Speech-Language Pathology at RIM is accredited by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Services are offered to RIM inpatients and at the outpatient locations listed below.

Spinal Cord Injury Services
Spinal Cord Injury services are provided by a comprehensive interdisciplinary team of experienced staff on our specialty inpatient unit and at the outpatient locations listed below. The inpatient and RIM Novi outpatient programs have the distinction of having specialty certification from the CARF (Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Depending on patient and family need, as well as program location, a broad array of services are available, including evaluations, individual and group treatments, home evaluations, community reintegration, internal case management and discharge planning, patient and family education/counseling, drivers' evaluation and training, pre-vocational, vocational and school planning. Team and patient/family conferences, as well as family instruction, are an integral part of the goal identification and treatment planning that occurs, all in an effort to achieve the highest level of functional independence in the home, community and workplace.
Also available is the innovative, leading edge Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, which focuses on treatment and techniques that optimize recovery from spinal cord injury. A high-intensity, activity-based therapy program is the cornerstone of this program.

Splinting
Splints are devices that are applied to an injured or damaged area of the body, often a joint, either to protect or assist with a function. Some splints allow movement (dynamic); some don't (static). They can be custom-made on site or specially selected from a stock of prefabricated splints. They are used to treat a variety of conditions where there might be weakness, limited motion, healing tissues, pain or neuromuscular impairment. RIM's staff of highly skilled occupational therapists, provide evaluations, fabrication or selection of splints and patient instruction. SportsAbility
This program facilitates opportunities for individuals with varying disabilities to engage in sports by coordinating and promoting the formation of teams, clinics, training, and adaptations. The emphasis is on building a foundation in the Detroit area through community contacts to address continuing rehabilitation needs following discharge. The program will promote health and fitness through involvement in sports and will provide education for beginning and maintaining involvement regardless of disability. RIM's program includes such sports programs as wheelchair basketball (summer/fall) and track and field (winter/spring).

Sports Rehab
Whether treating injuries due to recreational sports or high-intensity, professional sports, RIM has the skilled staff and well-equipped facilities to meet the rehabilitation needs of athletes. Many of our professional staff are Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists. We offer a full spectrum of treatment options, including exercise, mobilization, aquatic therapy, physical modalities, and foot orthotics. We even have a Motion Analysis and Gait Laboratory (see Motion Analysis and Gait Laboratory) that can provide information to help improve training and performance. Strain/Counterstrain
Strain/counterstrain is a form of manual therapy that attempts to increase motion and restore balance to the body by reducing strain on restricted soft tissues.
