Orthotics

Many RIM sites have staff who are skilled in evaluation, fabrication and prescription of foot orthotics for those who suffer from, or want to prevent, foot or leg problems. These are similar to shoe inserts, but are custom-made for each individual after a thorough evaluation. They can be used to help people from the high-intensity athlete to the diabetic with sensitive feet. Physician prescription required for outpatient services.

Osteoporosis

Women build bone mass until age 30. From this age to menopause, (around age 50 -54) no more bone is built. At menopause bone mass decreases. This condition is called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes thinning of bone and makes the spine, wrists, and hips prone to fracture. Spine fractures cause rounding of the back and result in painful mobility with impaired balance. Education and exercise are two important components of this rehabilitation service.

Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain encompasses a broad spectrum of painful conditions that may result from surgery or other medical problems. It can be a complex and debilitating problem that significantly impairs many aspects of a woman's quality of life. Typical pelvic pain locations are the low abdominal or pelvic regions and can include the internal and external genitalia (vagina and vulva). Evaluation and treatment are performed by physical therapists who are specialists in pelvic floor rehabilitation. Physician prescription required for outpatient therapy.

Pregnancy-Related Pain & Dysfunction

Great changes occur in a woman's body during pregnancy and every system in the body feels these changes. Especially affected are muscles, joints and ligaments. Pregnant women may experience aches and pains, from mild to very uncomfortable, in their low back, pubic bone (in the front of your pelvis), hips (one or both), groin or inner thighs. Other common areas are mid-back, and between shoulder blades. Pregnancy hormones are responsible for muscles, joints, and ligaments becoming lax (too flexible). A qualified physical therapist will evaluate the patient's pain and mobility and provide an appropriate treatment aimed at keeping the patient mobile and comfortable during and after her pregnancy. Physician prescription required for outpatient therapy.
