Burn Program

Angelia Bullard was burned over one-third of her body. She struggled with the way people reacted to her appearance because of her burns, but RIM helped her regain her confidence. Now Angelia speaks to RIM’s burn support group monthly to help other burn victims do the same.

RIM’s burn rehab program focuses on maximizing the healing of burns while minimizing the effects of scar tissue on patient function and range of motion. During burn injury rehab, RIM educates patients and families about the long-term effects of burns and the continuum of care RIM provides.

Burn scars continue to heal and shorten for up to two years after the injury, so the transition from inpatient burn rehab to outpatient burn rehab is critical for lasting patient health. The RIM burn rehab staff includes certified hand therapists and therapists trained in scar management and other techniques specific to burn healing.

Inpatient Burn Rehabilitation
Patients will:
  • Have access to therapists trained in manual scar management techniques, wound care, splinting, positioning, pain management, and use of compression burn garments to improve scar mobility and cosmesis
  • Work to improve basic daily function in order to return home
  • Learn how to promote the healing of burn wounds and prevent deformities from scar contracture
Outpatient Burn Rehabilitation
Patients will:
  • Continue to focus on increasing joint and skin mobility/integrity.
  • Undergo ongoing therapy needed to maintain range of motion and function and prevent deformities
