Shahida's Story

“It wasn’t easy, but the DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan brought me back…
Without this place, I just don’t know what I would have done.
They gave me back my voice; they gave me back my life.”

-Shahida Nurullah

Shahida was hit by a car while crossing the street. She woke up in the hospital almost three weeks later with multiple fractures and a serious brain injury that left her unable to walk or talk. As a professional singer, her greatest fear was that she would never sing again.

“When I first regained my memory, I had problems speaking,” says Shahida Nurullah.

“I had no idea if I would ever sing again because I had no idea if I was ever going to speak again.

“And then I thought, well this just won’t do because I’m a singer; I have to be able to speak; I have to be able to sing!”

“The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is an extraordinary facility,” says Shahida.

“I couldn’t imagine the success of my recovery without it. More than 23 years later, I still go there for therapy and to learn about my body.

“I sing the praises of the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan,” Shahida says
